MIT creates solar cell from grass clippings
A researcher at MIT, Andreas Mershin, has created solar panels from agricultural waste such as cut grass and dead leaves. In a few years, Mershin says it’ll be possible to stir some grass clippings into a bag of cheap chemicals, paint the mixture on your roof, and immediately start producing electricity.

VTA Installs Solar Power Systems at Its Three Bus Yards
The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA), in partnership with SunPower Corp. (NASDAQ: SPWR), Joint Venture Silicon Valley, and Wells Fargo, installed solar parking canopy systems, totaling 2.1 megawatts (MW), at its three bus maintenance divisions. Using a Power Purchase Agreement to finance the systems, it is anticipated that VTA will save $2.7 million in electricity costs over the next 20 years.

Siemens to Implement U.S. Army´s Largest Solar Photovoltaic System at White Sand
Siemens Government Technologies, Inc. announced today that the U.S. Army Engineering and Support Center has awarded a $16.8 million task order to implement energy-conserving upgrades, including a 4.465 MW solar photovoltaic (PV) power generating system—the largest to date for the U.S. Army—at the White Sands Missile Range, N.M.

The solar yield calculator app of Vario green energy is now available for Android smartphones. An iPhone version of it already exists. House and roof owners can calculate with the free app on their mobile phone, which yield a photovoltaic power plant would generate and how much CO² they can save. The program is available in English, German and Italian.

Donauer Solartechnik opens branch in Oman
Specialist distributor Donauer Solartechnik is opening a branch in Muscat, the capital of Oman, on 1 February. The solar company from Gilching near Munich is a partner in the joint venture with Saleh Ahmed Al Badi, who will direct the Donauer branch in Muscat. Previously, he was member of the executive board of Haya Water, one of the desert country´s largest companies.

Der Fachgroßhändler Donauer Solartechnik eröffnet am 01. Februar eine Niederlassung in Omans Hauptstadt Maskat. An dem Joint Venture mit Saleh Ahmed Al Badi ist die Solarfirma aus Gilching bei München mehrheitlich beteiligt. Al Badi übernimmt den Aufbau und die Geschäftsführung der Donauer LLC. Er war zuvor in der Geschäftsleitung von Haya Water tätig, einem der größten Unternehmen des Wüstenstaats.
